The Brewers were three outs from their first World Series title. Then Joey Ortiz bounced a throw, the Rays strung together three straight hits and Ben Williamson walked it off in the 12th. As Matt Vasgersian put it, it was “The Chopper Heard ‘Round the Causeway.” Williamson had been 1-for-15 this postseason before that swing.

Now the Rays are chasing something no team has ever done. Of the 25 teams to fall behind 3-0 in a World Series, all 25 lost in four or five games. Only four of them even won a Game 4, and every one of those four lost Game 5. A win tonight would make Tampa the first team ever to force a Game 6 from 0-3 down.

Kind of sounds like the 2004 Red Sox. The two series line up almost game for game: a tight Game 1, a Game 2 where the trailing team scored all its runs in one inning, a Game 3 blowout and a 12th-inning walk-off to avoid the sweep.

Milwaukee is still in a strong spot. The Brewers haven’t lost two games in a row since Labor Day weekend and they hand the ball to future CY Young winner Jacob Misiorowski. He’ll be making his first career start at Tropicana Field, though and he’s had problems with road mounds all season. Tampa their ace starting on three days’ rest. Both of those pitching storylines are behind tonight’s sharpest plays.

On top of that, one Brewer is three hits from a World Series record that has stood since 1964.
